Tomato Pulao, is a very easy to make Pulao  with just tomatoes, onions and mild spices. This is a one-pot pressure cooker method of making Tomato Pulao. For morning busy with kids lunch box, I always found this tomato pulao to be so quick and hassle free to make. We can relish with any raita of your choice. Generally whenever I pack tomato Pulao for lunch box, I will give plain raita separately and boondi separately for the kids to add it later to the curd. They love having this pulao with Boondi Raita.

Tips for making Tomato Pulao:

  1. I have used two big tomatoes – I have  chopped one tomato and add it with Pulao and  pureed the other tomato. We can chop both and use it as it is also. Or we can make a puree of both the tomatoes and use only the puree. Some kids doesn’t like to eat tomato or they are so picky and take every piece of tomato to discard. For them, we can boil the tomatoes, remove the skin and make a puree and use it
  2. We can add green peas or green bell pepper to enhance this rice with more flavor
  3. Instead of red chili powder and coriander powder, we can use sambar powder
  4. While pressure cooking Pulav, cook in low flame for 20 mins. In low flame we will not get any whistle from the cooker. Even if sometimes we get a whistle, it won’t be a problem. For this method, i have soaked the basmati rice for about 20 minutes and cooked it in low flame for 20  mins. For other rice varieties, the cooking time may slightly vary.
  5. The ratio of water & rice would be 1 cup water : 1 cup rice. This ratio worked well for Basmati Rice. But this ratio can change if you use other rice varieties. Look out for the instruction given in the package and add the water accordingly.
