Pepper Murukku Recipe | Spicy Peppercorns Indian Snack

Sometimes, we would like to make a quick, easy and also delicious savoury or spicy snack for tea time especially during weekend evenings! This Pepper Murukku is a perfect snack which is  quick and easy to make. It doesn’t need any expertise and nothing will go wrong in making Pepper Murukku. This would also be an ideal snack for Diwali or any festivals. Surprise your family and friends with this delicious Pepper Murukku!

Tips for making Pepper Murukku Recipe | Spicy Peppercorns Indian Snack:

  • Butter should be at room temperature. For Vegan, we can use hot oil. Butter makes the murukku melt in the mouth.
  • Add water little by little and knead it to a soft dough. The dough should not be too soft or too hard. Too soft dough will be easy to squeeze but it will take more time to get deep fried and sometimes it tend to burst in oil.
  • We can use thenkuzhal mould or star mould to squeeze the dough out of it.
  • Initially the oil should be hot, if you add a pinch of dough, it should raise immediately. After squeezing the murukku, keep the flame in low to medium and fry the murukku till golden brown.
  • Drain excess oil, allow it to cool and then store in air-tight container for longer shelf-life.

Pepper Murukku Recipe | Spicy Peppercorns Indian Snack

Pepper Murukku, a spicy and crunchy murukku which is very easy to make. Though its crispy, it will melt in mouth and you feel the spice of the pepper. Its a perfect tea time snack!

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Heavy Bottomed Pan

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Rice Flour 1 Cup - 250ml
  • ¾ Cup Gram Flour (Besan / Chickpea Flour)
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust as needed
  • 1 tbsp Pepper Powder Coarsely ground
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 3 tbsp Butter should be at room temperature
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 3 Cups Oil For Deep Frying

Instructions

Prepare Murukku Dough

  • Take a mixing bowl. Add rice flour, besan, asafetida, salt, freshly coarsely ground pepper powder, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, butter and mix everything well
  • Add water little by little and knead the flours to a smooth and soft dough
  • Take flower or star mould and press. Grease the inside of the press and mould with oil. Greasing oil helps us to squeeze out the dough easily out of the mould. Add 3-4 handful of murukku dough into the press and mould

Deep Frying

  • Heat oil in pan. If you drop a pinch of dough in oil it should rise up immediately in the oil. Hold the press and mould on top of the oil and gently squeeze the dough. Deep fry the pepper murukku till they are crispy and golden brown color
  • Take out the crispy murukku in a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Keep frying the murukku till all the dough is used up. Pepper Murkku is now ready to serve!
