Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu | Garlic Pepper Curry

Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu | Garlic Pepper Curry, one of the spicy, tasty and healthy South Indian Kuzhambu Variety. Pepper and Garlic is known be the most medicinal ingredients in our kitchen. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. For ear pain, my grandmother always go for Garlic. Also we all know the medicinal and nutritional value of peppercorns. The combination of garlic and peppercorns in this Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu makes this recipe very healthy and tasty.

The process of making Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu is similar to the traditional Milagu kuzhambu, just with the only variation of adding garlic. Quick, simple to make and very healthy. Sometimes we would prepare heavy meal for a festival or for some potluck or parties and we really  need some break for our tummy and also for us 🙂 , I would like to make this yummy kuzhambu to clear my system.

Garlic, as we know is very important to be included for lactating mom. We follow a Pathiya Samayal (Balanced Diet) for lactating mom and we include lots of garlic as it will help in increasing mother’s milk. We can make this Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu as part of the balanced diet.

Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu | Garlic Pepper Curry

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon Tamarind Size
  • 1/2 cup Garlic
  • Salt To taste
  • 1 tbsp Grated Jaggery

For Grinding

  • Red Chili 4-5
  • 1.5 tbsp Peppercorns
  • 2 tsp Whole Urad Dal
  • 2 tsp Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
  • 2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • Curry Leaves Few
  • Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing) a Pinch
  • 1 tsp Oil

For Tempering

  • 2 tbsp Sesame oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • Curry Leaves Few
  • 1 Red Chili

Instructions

Soaking Tamarind

  • Soak tamarind in warm water for 10 mins and extract the juice and keep it aside

Frying Grinding Ingredients

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add all the grinding ingredients mentioned above and fry till the dal turns light brown.

Grinding Process

  • Cool and Grind all the fried ingredients to a smooth paste and set it aside

Tempering Process

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Add broken red chili and curry leaves. Now add the peeled garlic to the pan and saute the garlic in oil in low-medium flame for 2 mins

Cook Kuzhambu

  • Add tamarind juice along with salt and boil in medium flame for 5 mins to get rid of the raw smell of tamarind juice
  • After 5 mins, add the spice paste and mix well. Keep flame in low and cook for 10 mins. If the kuzhambu becomes very thick, add water to adjust the consistency.

Final Touch

  • Add Jaggery and stir once and keep the kuzhambu for another 2 mins before switching off the flame

Serving Time

  • Serve the spicy and healthy Poondu Milagu Kuzhambu with hot steaming rice along with a teaspoon of ghee or oil and tasted papad and enjoy this perfect healthy meal!
