Sturdy, abundant and inexpensive, cabbage is a longstanding dietary staple throughout the world and is so widely cultivated and stores so well that it is available throughout the year. In southindia cabbage is cooked in many different ways and one such common recipe - Cabbage Poriyal (muttaikose poriyal) is given below. We can make plain poriyal using cabbage but, adding peas enhances the taste. Peas and cabbage goes very well. so, I always prefer to add peas in cabbage poriyal. I know, this is a very simple poriyal, but it might be of good help to the beginners.

Ingredients:
Cabbage | 500gms |
Green Peas | 1/4 Cup |
Green Chilli | 1 |
Salt | To taste |
Grated Coconut | 1 tablespoon |
Oil | 2 teaspoon |
Mustard Seeds | 1 teaspoon |
Split Urid Dal | 1 teaspoon |
Curry Leaves | few |

Method:
- Finely Chop the cabbage and clean it in water and strain it and keep it aside.
- Heat the oil in the pan, add mustard seeds and when the mustard seeds starts to sputter add the split urdhal and fry till it becomes golden brown and then add chopped green chilli along with curry leaves and saute them for couple of seconds. Then add chopped cabbage to the pan
- Add green peas and sprinkle little water and necessary salt and close the pan with a lid and keep the flame medium allow the cabbage poriyal to cook completely. When the cabbage is cooked add grated cocunut and mix it well and remove from flame
- The yummy cabbage poriyal is ready to serve
