Verkadalai Thogayal (Peanut thogayal) is a delicious accompaniment to Rice made using roasted ground nuts and coconut. We usually don’t add any spice, but still it tastes awesome. The first time when I heard about this recipe, I was so confused on how it will taste without any spice. But very surprisingly this no spice thogayal tastes so good with rice along with a teaspoon of ghee. I have already published Peanut Chutney which is a perfect side dish for Idli/dosa, but this one is a perfect accompaniment for rice. This Peanut thogayal is very easy to make with rich flavor of peanut and coconut.

Tips to make best tasting Peanut Thogayal

  1. Peanuts – You can very much use readily available roasted peanuts. If you get only the raw peanuts, then you need to roast it on a medium  flame until golden and aromatic. I prefer to remove the skin before grinding. But you can also use the peanuts with skin for this thogayal.
  2. Spice – In this recipe, i have not added any spice (Red / Green Chili / Pepper). It will taste good without any spice. But if you want to add spice, you can add 1 or 2 red chili and grind it along with Peanut / Coconut mixture

You can also try:

  1. Mint Thogayal
  2. Kollu Thogayal
  3. Pirandai Thogayal
  4. Beetroot Thogayal
  5. Thengai Thogayal
  6. Kovakkai Thogayal

Verkadalai Thogayal | No Spice Peanut Thogayal

Verkadalai Thogayal | No Spice Peanut Thogayal a very mild but yummy thogayal variety. We can mix with rice along with a spoon of ghee and enjoy the delicious rice.

  • 50 gms Peanut (I used raw unsalted peanuts without skin)
  • 1 Cup Grated Coconut (1 cup = 250 ml)
  • 1 Gooseberry Size Tamarind (We can use 1 Teaspoon of Tamarind paste instead)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida (Asafetida / Hing)

Roasting Peanuts

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add asafoetida and give a stir.

  2. If using Roasted Peanut then skip this step. Add the peanuts and roast the peanuts till they become light brown. This is a no spice thogayal. But if you want, roast 2 red chili along with peanuts.

Grinding Process

  1. If you have used skinned peanuts, then remove the skin of the Peanut. Take the roasted peanuts to mixer jar. Add tamarind, grated coconut, salt and grind everything to a coarse paste.

  2. Add water only if needed. Grinding peanuts itself releases oil which is sufficient for thogayal. But if you feel the thogayal is dry and crumbly, then sprinkle water little by little and grind it to the desired consistency

Serving Time

  1. Serve the delicious no spice Peanut Thogayal with rice along with a spoon of ghee and enjoy the thogayal!

  1. We can use store bought roasted peanuts instead of raw peanuts to save time.
