Very simple to make gravy with just onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves and Indian spices. The coriander leaves add a great flavor to the whole dish. Adding coriander leaves not only adds flavor but also its good for health because we are including some greens as part of this recipe.We don’t have any other rich ingredients like cashews or paneer etc. This South Indian Style Tomato Coriander Masala is so delicious and so tempting.

South Indian Style Tomato Coriander Masala
Equipment
- Mixer Grinder
- Heavy Bottomed Pan
Ingredients
- 2 finely Onion Chopped
- 5 finely Tomato Chopped
- 0.25 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tsp Salt Adjust As Needed
For Grinding
- 0.5 cup Coriander Leaves
- 0.5 cup Grated Coconut
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 2 Green Chilli
For Tempering
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 2 tsp Split Bengal Gram (Channa Dal / Kadalaparuppu)
- Curry Leaves Few
Instructions
Working with Grinding Ingredients
- In a mixer jar, add coriander leaves, grated coconut, cumin seeds and green chilli and grind everything to a smooth paste.
Tempering Process
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Add split urad dal to the pan and saute till dal turns light golden color. To the pan, add curry leaves
Saute Onions
- To the pan, add chopped onions and saute the onions till translucent. When the onions are cooked, add turmeric powder and red chilli powder and saute the masala
Cooking Ground Masala
- To the pan, now add the coriander and spice paste along with salt. Let this ground masala cook in low flame for 10 mins
Time to add Tomato
- Now, time to add tomatoes. Add tomatoes to the pan and mix well. Add 1 cup of water and cover and cook the masala in low flame for 10 mins. When the tomatoes are cooked well, switch off the flame.
Serving Time!
