Red Coconut Chutney, is a very popular chutney variety in most of the southern parts of Tamil Nadu. A spicy version of Coconut chutney with a rich flavor of garlic and onions. A perfect accompaniment for Idli, dosa and many breakfast dishes. Adding 1 garlic clove itself gives a high aroma. This is one of the chutney very famous in Murugan Idli Shop in Tamilnadu.

Grinding Ingredients:
Fresh Grated Coconut | 1/2 Cup* |
Roasted Gram Dal | 2 tablespoon |
Red Chilli | 5 Broken |
Salt | To taste |
Tamarind | 1 small gooseberry size |
Garlic | 1 |
Shallots (Baby onions) | 4 |
* 1 Cup = 250ml
For Seasoning:
Coconut Oil | 1 tablespoon |
Mustard Seeds | 1 teaspoon |
Red Chilli | 2 Broken |
Split Urid Dal | 1 teaspoon |
Curry Leaves | Few |
Hing | a Generous Pinch |

Method:
- Take all the grinding ingredients to the mixer jar. Grind everything to a nice paste by adding little water
- In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. When the mustard seeds starts to sputter, add split urid dal, red chili, hing and curry leaves and fry till the dal become golden brown color
- Add the seasoned ingredients to the chutney
- The delicious and spicy Red Coconut Chutney is ready! Serve with Idli or dosa and enjoy the dish!
